—–This is a great time of year to fish near Anna Maria Island and Tampa Bay. Although a short snook season has been opened, redfish, trout, flounder, snapper, cobia and permit have taken center stage for near shore fishing.

—–Shiners have been easier to catch over the last few weeks, so we have had no problem getting the trout, snook and redfish to turn-on. Artificial lures will work well but it’s easier to get the bite going with live bait. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing over this last week or so out of Island Discount Tackle in Holmes Beach has been great. The wind has been less than July and live bait (shiners) has been easier to get.
—–We started on Wednesday, July 31st with a nice catch of redfish and snook. There was a high, outgoing tide from early morning through mid afternoon. This let us fish some mangrove shorelines before the water was too shallow.
—–Over the next few mornings, the tide was high but not moving very fast so I changed our strategy. We fished some rock piles in Tampa Bay for mackerel and then moved to some intracoastal waterway docks where we found some big, hungry flounder. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on beautiful Anna Maria island has produced a mixed bag of fish landed for the dinner table as well as some exciting tackle busting action.
—–With the heat of the Summer upon us, I have had to change my game plan up to be successful . The high water temperatures 85f+ on the flats have forced the fish out of the skinny water and into their deeper water haunts. Speckled trout are feeding in 3-8ft of water and will chew a variety of baits. I like to fish the deep grass areas of Tampa bay and the intracoastal waterway Locate the schools of slot fish and you should have no trouble getting your limit. Continue Reading…

—–A few years ago, a red tide outbreak decimated the Tampa Bay area flounder population. BUT..this year, the late summer flounder fishing around Anna Maria Island has been nothing short of spectacular. Live bait, dead bait, cut bait strips and artificials have all been catching flatties.
—–Flounder are ambush feeders. If you can find some sandy bottom near structure, such as artificial reefs, docks or bridges, then you can catch some flounder. The sandy bottom, some structure and a nice tidal flow are the keys! Continue Reading…

—–Hot summer days are a good time to catch redfish around Anna Maria Island. If the tide is high and falling fast, we might try the potholes away from the shoreline as the reds move to deeper water and wait for the tide to push dinner their way. If the tide is high, you can try right against the mangrove shoreline. On high water or on windy days, the boat docks might hold some redfish. Continue Reading…

—–Although it has been a windy month, fishing action for spanish mackerel has been very hot this summer. Most areas of bottom structure, like the many artificial reefs near Anna Maria Island, have been good places to look for a “big mack attack”. There are many different ways to catch mackerel but this is one of the best.
—–I usually throw a marker jug on the structure, anchor up-tide from the target and start chumming. You can hang a chum block from a cleat or simply start throwing dead shiners or chopped pieces of sardines so they float back into the structure. Continue Reading…

—–The weather and the fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle has been nothing short of spectacular.
—–Offshore we still have kingfish. In fact I had three trips this week where we caught good numbers of kings up to twenty-five pounds. While fishing for kings we also caught spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, black tip sharks and catch-and-release grouper.
—–Inshore snook are making their run to the passes for the spawn. Lots of dark fish just out from the backcountry showed up just this past week. Redfish are still there for the taking just not in the huge schools of a couple of weeks ago. Trout will be on the deeper grass flats around the bay as we come up on this next full moon.
