—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria island has produced some amazing and action packed fish catching opportunities on our beautiful waters of Manatee county.
—–The Spring pattern is just now taking hold with the inshore slam; snook ,speckled trout.and redfish coming alive on to the flats and feeding heavily as they start their exit from their Winter time hang outs ,docks and deep water, onto the their Springtime haunts, flats and potholes. On my recent charters we have been concentrating on snook as the season opened March 1. Now is the best time to get one for the dinner table . Rallies of 20 fish a trip have been the norm when you can find moving warm water and their feeding stations. This week’s “High Hook”went to snowbird Robert Lyons,85,of Davenport Fl and Saratoga NY with a pair of over slot snook 36″ and 34” snook all caught while fishing seated on a cushion fishing with a bobber and a large shiner . After pictures both fish were released to fight another day . The key to catching the big ones has been to use the biggest shiners in your live well and tossing your baits a country mile away from your boat. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria Island has been productive when the weather cooperates . The weather has been the deciding factor in where I have been fishing, typical for the winter time fishing pattern.
—–Dock fishing for redfish and black drum has been good with the fish feeding under deepwater docks with heavy barnacle growth as they will hold more crabs and crustaceans living on the pilings. Rigging with a live shrimp and a split shot weight will get the bait in the strike zone. On my recent trips we have had success with redfish in the upper slot range. Continue Reading…

—–With the passing of all the recent cold fronts ,the 55-59f water temperature, and the influx of the snowbirds the winter fishing pattern has arrived in full force . Taking advantage of what mother nature gives you can yield a nice creel of fish for fun action and a bag of fillets. Fishing out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria island, redfish, sheep head ,mangrove snapper and black drum have made a strong appearance in our area.
—–Redfish of varying sizes from 12″rats to 30″ stumps been feeding under the deep water docks . Use a live shrimp rigged on a size 1 hook tied to a 30lb fluorocarbon leader with a size 5 or 7 split shot . Toss your bait with a side arm casting motion to get the bait deep underneath the dock .It is important to get the bait deep under the dock to where the predators are living. Wait for the thump of the fish chewing the bait and slowly lift your rod to feel the fish on and then set the hook.
—–Sheephead have been feeding heavily as they are starting to gather in big schools . Using the same rig as mentioned above, my recent charters have brought some 18″ convicts to the fillet table. Mangrove snapper and black drum are also coming to the party .
—–Looking forward the speckled trout fishing will start to turn on as the fish will school in deeper water and school in areas where the water temperature is a few degrees warmer. Until next time keep the slack out of your line and feel the thump of the predator inhaling your bait.

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on beautiful Anna Maria island has produced a mixed bag of fish landed for the dinner table as well as some exciting tackle busting action.
—–With the heat of the Summer upon us, I have had to change my game plan up to be successful . The high water temperatures 85f+ on the flats have forced the fish out of the skinny water and into their deeper water haunts. Speckled trout are feeding in 3-8ft of water and will chew a variety of baits. I like to fish the deep grass areas of Tampa bay and the intracoastal waterway Locate the schools of slot fish and you should have no trouble getting your limit. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle at Keyes Marina on Anna Maria Island has been steady with some red hot action mixed in. Speckled trout, redfish and snook have been feeding when the current has been moving .
—–Speckled trout have been the go-to fish for some fillets for the dinner table and exciting action on the flats of Tampa Bay . Many gator trout were landed this past week on my recent charters. A lively shiner rigged on a 1/0 hook with a piece of 30 lb fluorocarbon leader under a popping cork has drawn many of these snaggle toothed predators to the dinner table. Make the old school bobbers pop and gurgle and the bait flash to draw the strikes. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing out of Island Discount Tackle on beautiful Anna Maria island , this past week’s fishing has produced a variety of fishing opportunities and fillets for the dinner table .
—–On my recent charters we have been landing redfish, speckled trout and sheephead.
—–Sheephead fishing has been good this year with many big ones landed . Live shrimp rigged on a size 1 hook and a split shot will get the convict-looking fish to bite. With the passing of the full moon the sheephead fishing will slow down as they will not be schooling as thick as when they spawn. For fun action and a change of pace try catching them on the flats in potholes and around oyster bars.
—–Redfish have been chewing in a many different areas such as docks, piers ,and the flats. The high hook this past week went to Andy Markevich with his 30″ redfish that was caught on a lively pinfish rigged on a popping cork. Reds are still under deepwater docks too.
—–Speckled trout are starting to gather in big schools on the deep grass of Key Royale. Work a popping cork rigged with a small jig and your favorite Berkley Gulp . Some gator-sized trout are in shallow water ambushing baits swimming into the potholes.
—–Looking forward, the winter-time fishing is yielding to the spring-time fishing pattern as the days get longer and the water gets warmer. The fishing scene will soon explode with shiners invading the flats of Tampa Bay. This will signal some incredible fishing action.
