—Tarpon fishing has slowed down this week due to a few moon/tide/spawning changes, but should pick back up soon.

—In the meantime, the mangrove snapper bite has continued to be great. Live and dead pilchards have been the bait of choice, with the larger fish being caught during the strongest period of the tide. Besides being a very fun and strong fight on light tackle, they are some of the best-eating fish that swim!

—St. Pete/Tampa residents Kevin Williams & family caught their limit of big mangrove snapper today despite some rough conditions.

—The inshore bite has exploded back onto the scene this week with snook leading the charge. Live bait fishing with greenbacks has been the ticket to plenty of action following our recent warming trend.
—Morning and afternoon charters have both been producing plenty of action.
—My clients are also catching piles of trout, redfish, flounder, and pompono in these same general areas.
—The action is red hot, come and get some!!

—So far, February has been a paradox of warm, sunny days and blustery cold temperatures. However, in the face of this less than ideal weather pattern, the inshore/nearshore bite is gathering steam. We really started hammering the big spawning sheepshead around the beginning of the month. Almost any of the public inshore/nearshore reefs will be holding nice sheepies this month.
—Redfish, black drum, and flounder have been a staple around inshore residential docks and canals. Live shrimp as well as jigs such as the gulp shrimp have been top producers.
—Pompano and permit remain hit or miss so far this month. Probing the edges of deeper grass flats, or the local passes and adjoining beachfront, with a 1/4oz. pompano jig tipped with a chunk of shrimp has been the ticket.

—Josh Sato and Joey Mattay have the permit dialed in. They found May and early June to be an action-packed time period, with the nearby offshore wrecks and structure holding spawning fish. Joey and Josh said that the best way to pull off a catch of big permit was to drift baits back to the fish after anchoring up-current of structure within 20 miles of Anna maria Island.
—Small pass crabs were said to be the bait of choice, and they were most effective when suspended just above the targeted structure.
—This action may be slowing down as June draws to a close, but if you get a chance to try these techniques and hook into some big permit, be sure to HOLD ON TIGHT!
