—Inshore:
Good numbers of trout showing up on the grass flats, with the biggest fish coming from skinny water around mangroves. Redfish and flounder are around residential docks, and shiners or pinfish around pilings have produced this week.
Snook bite seems to be getting going. Catching plenty of schoolie-sized fish, with a few slotties in the mix.

—Nearshore:
Mangrove snapper are still making a good showing on nearshore structure, along with plenty of throw-back gag grouper. Kingfish and sharks are beginning to make a show around schools of bait, gathering around local reefs/wrecks. Most action this week coming from 3 – 7 miles off the beach.

—This week, Tampa Bay and Anna Maria Island fishing has been defined by strong South winds, and tough, but surprisingly productive fishing. Nearshore fishing has produced Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and some flounder. Offshore reef fishing has been providing larger mangrove snapper bites, as well as sharks in high numbers, and the occasional kingfish.

—We managed to get a nice kingfish on wire leader and heavy tackle while chumming with pilchards over structure off of the beaches. Sharks have begun to congregate over structure off of the beaches this time of year also due to the annual mullet run. They are tons of fun, and can be caught by hanging a chum bag over structure and using live or dead baits. Pinfish, ladyfish, or mackerel chunks will work fine, and be sure to rig your tackle with a steel leader to combat their sharp teeth. Large mangrove snapper over 20 inches are being caught by my clients while fishing with shrimp and small pilchards over these same reefs, and can’t be beat as table fare. Light line, and small hooks/sinkers are the key to enticing these smart fish to bite.

—Have fun and stay safe!

—–Fishing local nearshore wrecks, reefs, and areas of live bottom has been producing plenty of mangrove snappers, cobia, catch-and-release groupers, flounder, mackerel, sharks, and kingfish. I’ve been using live bait for most of these guys, although we’ve caught a bunch of kingfish trolling plugs, as well as live bait, this month.
—–The snappers were seeing this month have been abundant and hungry!

—With the cold come the kingfish, and 50-60 ft. structures off of Anna Maria Island, Florida have been holding them.
—Usually after finding the structure, try to troll 5-6 knots in circles around the perimeter of the structure. If a ball of bait is found during your trolling pattern, get ready!
—I have been using a wire leader with any lipped diving plug. Lately, 6-8 pounders have been common, but if you try hard enough, maybe you will be the one to snatch up a 30 pounder!
—Kingfish are hard-fighters, and although oily in taste and texture, they are some of the best fish for smoking. So get out there, give it a try, and have fun!
