— Despite the persistent South wind last week, we got offshore to do some reef fishing. Bait has been harder to find, but live pilchards and shrimp on offshore structure have been productive when paired with a moving tide.

— Grouper, mangrove snapper, hogfish, and cobia have all been hanging around on the reefs, and we managed to have some great days out there!

—This morning’s wind whipped the gulf into a soup, but the mangrove snapper bite was as good as I have ever seen it. The strong tide, wind, low-light, and dirty water made these finicky fish feel more comfortable than they usually are. They seemed to have trouble seeing the hook, lines, and sinkers, and were easier to fool. Whatever the case, my clients managed to get their limit within an hour or so.

—Sea trout were eating well this afternoon, and we managed to get into some nearly every-cast action near the grass flats and channel edges with a moving tide. Pilchards, shrimp, jigs, and pinfish are the baits of choice for this ambush predator.

—Flounder are also showing up off of the beaches near structure and the sandy areas surrounding it. They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans, and will readily take artificials.

—Tampa Bay mangrove snapper have continued to gather heavily on structure near the beaches and passes, with a strong morning bite seeming to be the ticket to a full cooler.

—They have been eating shrimp, small crabs, pinfish, dead/live pilchards, and have responded well to chum.

—Very strong fighters for their size, if we don’t get them to the boat quickly they will pull us into the structure or be lost to sharks, goliath grouper, and barracuda. It seems that we aren’t the only ones who love the taste of fresh snapper!

—Tarpon fishing has slowed down this week due to a few moon/tide/spawning changes, but should pick back up soon.

—In the meantime, the mangrove snapper bite has continued to be great. Live and dead pilchards have been the bait of choice, with the larger fish being caught during the strongest period of the tide. Besides being a very fun and strong fight on light tackle, they are some of the best-eating fish that swim!

—St. Pete/Tampa residents Kevin Williams & family caught their limit of big mangrove snapper today despite some rough conditions.

—June has been hot, rainy, and action-packed.

—Tarpon are running full-bore right now, and mangrove snapper are plentiful nearshore. We have had the most success with tarpon while sight-casting at first light near the beaches, and then anchoring and chumming them to the boat as the morning progresses.

—Mangrove snapper have been consistently on shallow structure and debris, where they sometimes can be chummed into a frenzy. If so, light line and small hooks can lead to every-cast action.
Longtime Tampa residents from Philadelphia, PA; Gavin, Kieren, and Ray Hyer put a hurting’ on the mangrove snapper this morning! Great job guys! (pics below)

—–Fishing local nearshore wrecks, reefs, and areas of live bottom has been producing plenty of mangrove snappers, cobia, catch-and-release groupers, flounder, mackerel, sharks, and kingfish. I’ve been using live bait for most of these guys, although we’ve caught a bunch of kingfish trolling plugs, as well as live bait, this month.
—–The snappers were seeing this month have been abundant and hungry!

—–The last week has been all about snook, trout, and redfish. The inshore bite has remained strong, centered around the morning incoming tides, and afternoon outgoings. A frisky live shiner continues to be the go-to bait. Although, I have seen plenty of snook and trout eat a fly this week! Continue Reading…

——-What a beautiful week it has been to get in a little fishing around Anna Maria Island. Frequent morning rains have subsided and we’re back to a more typical weather pattern for this time of year. Bait has been abundant, and getting bigger by the day. I’ve been finding plenty of shiners and small pinfish on the grass flats, in the bay and on the beach. Continue Reading…

—–Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, who was visiting fellow NHRA Hall of Famer and Anna Maria resident, Fred Miller, had a good weekend fishing Tampa Bay for snapper and sheepshead. Using small jigheads and live shrimp, Don and Fred had good luck fishing around some of the artificial reefs scattered around the Bay.
—–Now that we have turned the corner into March, we will start looking for more opportunities to catch redfish and big trout.
—–Although shiners are not an easy catch on the grassflats, there are bait schools around the Skyway Bridge and these shiners will be fun to throw at the redfish and trout.

—–Fishing during the last half of February has been a lot of fun this year. My charters have caught lots of snapper, sheepshead, pompano and some amazing black drum. I have been taking along some big tarpon-style rods on our trips and calling them the “drum sticks”. Continue Reading…
