—I have FINALLY begun to see pompano show up in Anna Maria Island waters. As water temperatures slowly rise, some much-needed energy is being brought to the whole system.
Fishing with small, brightly colored jigs is one of the most effective ways to catch pompano. We are also catching plenty on a corked live shrimp inside the bay, and around areas of deep grass.
Most “first-timers” can’t belive how hard a 15 inch fish can pull! Pompano is a firm and mild white meat fish, making it particularly popular for the dinner table. Book a trip while it’s on!

—With the Christmas season approaching, another season is doing the same. Yes, that’s right — it’s time to start stalking the shorelines for pompano.
—The beaches of Anna Maria Island are a great place to start searching. Despite the beach renourishment totally changing our local shoreline, pompano fishers should be able to find a bite.

—Some of the more popular pompano spots are now buried with sand so you may need to do your homework to find the fish. And by homework I mean cruising up and down the beach until the right conditions appear. Look for spots along the beach where the trough still exists. The trough is the stretch of water between the shoreline and the first sandbar. Pompano use this as a highway to hunt for sand fleas up and down the shore. If you can find the trough, you’re looking in the right place. You just have to hope the fish are there.

—To catch pompano, fishers use a variety of baits and lures. Pompano like crustaceans, so using live shrimp, sand fleas and even small crabs will produce a bite. Small jigs also work well for pompano. There are a variety of sizes and shapes so it’s best to carry a few of each to see which one works. You can also have the best of both worlds by taking the jig you’re using and tip it with a small piece of shrimp. This way, you have the action of the jig combined with the smell of the shrimp — a deadly combination that can give you an edge when the pomps are finicky.

—Remember, according to FWC, pompano have to be a minimum size of 11-inches to the fork of the tail. There is no maximum size. The bag limit for pompano is 6 per person per day.

—–Fishing during the last half of February has been a lot of fun this year. My charters have caught lots of snapper, sheepshead, pompano and some amazing black drum. I have been taking along some big tarpon-style rods on our trips and calling them the “drum sticks”. Continue Reading…

—–Although the weather in February dictates where you can go and what you can find to catch, there are usually some spots we can get to that hold fish. Over the last week or so, we have been fishing mainly for pompano, permit and sheepshead.
—–This is the time of year when you can catch the really big sheepshead. If they have to be measured, then we throw them back. The big ones, 15″+, will have some very nice fillets. There are many artificial reefs in Manatee County where you can catch a mess of sheepshead this month. Once you are lucky enough to locate them, you have a good chance of getting more than one. If you want to use shrimp for bait, I suggest attaching the shrimp to a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig head instead of hooking the shrimp and using a weight 12-18 inches up the line. The light bite/nibble of the fish is much more detectable if the weight is right at the bait. Continue Reading…

—–During the calm days of January and early February we have been able to locate beautiful, big pompano on several occasions. They tend to move in schools along sandy bottoms and shorelines where there is ample tide movement. Donald Wallace from Atlanta and his twin brother, David, from Knoxville were with me last week when the pompano were biting.
—–Once you are lucky enough to locate them, you have a good chance of getting more than one. Light tackle is the name of this game. 8 or 10 pound test line with a clear, fluorocarbon leader in the 20 pound test range along with a colorful lead headed jig makes a great terminal setup.
