—This week, Tampa Bay and Anna Maria Island fishing has been defined by strong South winds, and tough, but surprisingly productive fishing. Nearshore fishing has produced Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and some flounder. Offshore reef fishing has been providing larger mangrove snapper bites, as well as sharks in high numbers, and the occasional kingfish.

—We managed to get a nice kingfish on wire leader and heavy tackle while chumming with pilchards over structure off of the beaches. Sharks have begun to congregate over structure off of the beaches this time of year also due to the annual mullet run. They are tons of fun, and can be caught by hanging a chum bag over structure and using live or dead baits. Pinfish, ladyfish, or mackerel chunks will work fine, and be sure to rig your tackle with a steel leader to combat their sharp teeth. Large mangrove snapper over 20 inches are being caught by my clients while fishing with shrimp and small pilchards over these same reefs, and can’t be beat as table fare. Light line, and small hooks/sinkers are the key to enticing these smart fish to bite.

—Have fun and stay safe!

—This past week the wind has picked up. We have been able to fish a few days, but only in sheltered areas and close to shore. Although red tide is present, it is mainly South in Sarasota bay, so trolling for grouper has stayed productive. Redfish have begun to move to the docks. Sharks and mackerel have been roaming the beaches and large schools can be found following the thread fin herring.

—Live pilchards are still being caught. As the temperature begins to drop they should  disappear, causing a switch to shrimp as the main bait/food source. When trolling for grouper, I use lipped diving plugs and drag them slowly over structure. If you decide to target sharks and mackerel off of the beach, be sure to keep some wire handy as regular monofilament line will be easily cut by their sharp teeth.

—Good luck and have fun out there.

—Shark fishing has stayed red hot this summer, and we have been catching black tip, spinner, and lemon sharks near the passes and off of the beaches.

—This week, small sardine schools have moved close to shore. We have had success by chasing the bait fish, and then casting mackerel chunks into the middle of them.

—To determine if a bait school is particularly active with sharks and other predators, watch it closely for about one minute before approaching. If there are no splashes, birds, or fins cutting through the surface, then move on until you find more commotion.

—If an active bait school is found, sharks will likely be caught every cast.

—Summer shark fishing has been a blast, and my clients and I have been catching quite a few blacktip sharks, lemon sharks, and spinner sharks. These fish are fantastic fighters, and the spinner shark will usually jump multiple times when hooked.

—They are commonly caught by using dead seatrout or spanish mackerel with a cable leader and heavy-duty rods and reels.

—High water and outgoing tides near channel edges will usually produce an action-packed day.

—–Fishing local nearshore wrecks, reefs, and areas of live bottom has been producing plenty of mangrove snappers, cobia, catch-and-release groupers, flounder, mackerel, sharks, and kingfish. I’ve been using live bait for most of these guys, although we’ve caught a bunch of kingfish trolling plugs, as well as live bait, this month.
—–The snappers were seeing this month have been abundant and hungry!

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on beautiful Anna Maria island has produced a mixed bag of fish landed for the dinner table as well as some exciting tackle busting action.
—–With the heat of the Summer upon us, I have had to change my game plan up to be successful . The high water temperatures 85f+ on the flats have forced the fish out of the skinny water and into their deeper water haunts. Speckled trout are feeding in 3-8ft of water and will chew a variety of baits. I like to fish the deep grass areas of Tampa bay and the intracoastal waterway Locate the schools of slot fish and you should have no trouble getting your limit. Continue Reading…

—–April 2—– I fished around Anna Maria with Bob Salmon joined by his two sons, Hunter and Keegan, and Bob’s friend Dan Barker. We started out fishing some near shore structure with good results. Using live shiners for bait we managed to boat 4 cobia and a 22 inch flounder. Then we switched to using live shrimp on a knocker rig which resulted in numerous keeper mangrove snapper as well as some sheepshead in the 3 to 4 lb range. To finish out the day we rallied on spanish mackerel and a few black tip sharks. Not bad for a bunch of guys from Michigan. Continue Reading…
