—Summers in Southwest Florida are hot, humid, and sometimes downright mean. A fun and cool alternative to the heat is to fish at night. Anna Maria Island canals are a great place to look, especially near lighted docks and underwater lights. Redfish , snook, and trout are the common targets near these beacons.
—Last week I had a lot of fun night fishing with Derek Purves from Scotland. We started at twilight by fly fishing for trout along edges of the grassflats. After a good bite there, we switched to glass minnow imitations, then moved into the canals after dark.
—After finding active lights that held baitfish, we had a blast catching redfish and seatrout. The trick is to cast on the edges of the light where the predators are waiting, instead of directly underneath.
