—Fishing around Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and the rest of Tampa Bay in October is truly one of the best times of the year. Snapper are everywhere. Redfish make a big showing. Snook start moving into the backwaters. But one of the things I always try to remember is that on any given day we may run across some cobia.
—A typical run-in with a cobia usually starts by anchoring on some reef or structure to fish for snapper or spanish mackerel while we are keeping one eye peeled for anything big back in our chum line. We chum to bring-in the baitfish. The snapper and mackerel follow. Hopefully the cobia are nearby and can also be lured within casting distance. If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to slap a slab of cobia on the grill that evening!
