—–Fishing during the last half of February has been a lot of fun this year. My charters have caught lots of snapper, sheepshead, pompano and some amazing black drum. I have been taking along some big tarpon-style rods on our trips and calling them the “drum sticks”. Continue Reading…

—–Although the weather in February dictates where you can go and what you can find to catch, there are usually some spots we can get to that hold fish. Over the last week or so, we have been fishing mainly for pompano, permit and sheepshead.
—–This is the time of year when you can catch the really big sheepshead. If they have to be measured, then we throw them back. The big ones, 15″+, will have some very nice fillets. There are many artificial reefs in Manatee County where you can catch a mess of sheepshead this month. Once you are lucky enough to locate them, you have a good chance of getting more than one. If you want to use shrimp for bait, I suggest attaching the shrimp to a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig head instead of hooking the shrimp and using a weight 12-18 inches up the line. The light bite/nibble of the fish is much more detectable if the weight is right at the bait. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria Island has been productive when the weather cooperates . The weather has been the deciding factor in where I have been fishing, typical for the winter time fishing pattern.
—–Dock fishing for redfish and black drum has been good with the fish feeding under deepwater docks with heavy barnacle growth as they will hold more crabs and crustaceans living on the pilings. Rigging with a live shrimp and a split shot weight will get the bait in the strike zone. On my recent trips we have had success with redfish in the upper slot range. Continue Reading…

—This past week my clients and I have been able to get consistent catches of small permit and good sized pompano. These fish have been caught while moving through the edges of the passes, and have been eating shrimp-tipped jigs. Small white bucktail jigs, pompano jigs, crazy jigs, and of course a plain old shrimp will all work fine if you locate the fish.
—To locate the fish, try slowly moving along the edges of the passes with the sun at your back. Look for groups of small dark shadows swimming quickly along the sand bottom.

—Although it has warmed up slightly these past couple of weeks, the sheepshead bite has still been red-hot around structure. My clients and I have been finding them around submerged structure, as well as near docks and bridges. The bite has been on during almost all tides, and the baits of choice have been sand fleas and shrimp.
—The trick to getting consistent bites when sheepshead fishing is to use light fluorocarbon leaders with small, size 4 hooks. A light split shot will also be needed in order to get the bait to the bottom.

—Although red grouper season will not  be open until April 1st, my clients have still been able to catch plenty of snapper, flounder, porgies, and amberjack. Our trips offshore usually range from 3-30 miles, depending on the target species and the weather.
—We have been using live pinfish to catch grouper, and shrimp for the snapper, porgy, and flounder. The amberjack usually average around 20 pounds, and have been eating anything from jigs to frozen sardines.
—This nice mangrove snapper was caught 20 miles offshore while using live shrimp.

—My clients have been having a great time catching big sheepshead, snapper, and grouper around structure in Tampa Bay. The Egmont Reef has also been holding fish during the slack tides, and the grassflats have been producing redfish and trout.
—The key to enticing the sheepshead to bite has been by using fiddler crabs or live shrimp with a light fluorocarbon leader and a small size 4 hook. Split-shot weights, or 1/4-1/2 oz. jigheads have also been working well as the tide picks up.

—We caught this gator trout recently while fishing the grassflats near Anna Maria Island. The trout bite has been strong inshore, and we’ve also been managing to consistently get some sheepshead, redfish, grouper, and snapper.
