Even with some weather around we still managed a great week of fishing here on Anna Maria Island.  Late Spring is a great time of the year for inshore fishing, we caught everything from Redfish, Snook, Flounder, Sea Trout, Spanish Mackerel, and a few other species on our charters.     With water temperatures warming up the fishing is hot. We are catching lots of Snook, Trout, Mackerel, and the occasional Redfish and Flounder inshore. The Kingfish are showing up offshore and we get the chance to catch them if the weather permits. They are ranging from 15 to 30 lbs. Come and book your trip to get in on the action!

—The water temperature is up, and snook are on fire!

—After fishing mostly docks for the past few weeks, it is nice to be able to fish the grass flats again.  With the water temperature getting over 70 degrees, the spring bite is on.  Snook are out in numbers and are aggressively attacking everything we throw at them. Continue Reading…

—A cold front has finally arrived, and has brought with it a change in the bait. It is becoming harder to find shiners off of the beaches and near structure. It is also a bit smaller. A switch to shrimp is probably your best bet with the cooler temperatures arriving.

—Grouper and flounder have still been biting, along with mangrove snapper, ladyfish, mackerel, and snook. Sheepshead will soon be plentiful, and these delicious fish are also great fighters.

—This week should be quite windy, with forecasts of 20+mph. If you can find a place out of the wind, you may still be able to catch a ton of fish. Good luck and have fun.

—This is the time of year that I like to start trolling large artificial plugs in the shallow backwaters looking for gag grouper. Grouper are suckers for a well-placed lure that comes within their attack zone. I usually try along some rocky edges of the Intracoastal Waterway or Tampa Bay ships’channel. Who knows, you may even suprise yourself with a 25 inch flounder!
—We are also fishing the nearshore reefs for snapper and mackerel and finding turned-on redfish and snook in the backwaters.

—A strange weather pattern last week with wind and rain in the mornings led to some action-packed inshore fishing.

—Fishing around inshore/nearshore structure, bridges, and docks produced good catches of mangrove snapper, flounder, gag grouper, and a few redfish. This seems to be that time of the summer when the snook and trout fishing starts to heat up.

—These fish are finishing their spawning cycles offshore, and are returning to the bay. The next month or so can be the hottest of the year, so fishing early and late is going to be the way to go.

—Flounder fishing is great near Anna Maria Island, Florida in July. The large females move out of the backwater shallows and into the Gulf.

—This flow of big female fish allows for us to take advantage by fishing the passes and structure within ten miles of the beaches.

—We have been catching big flounder with live pilchards and weights to keep them on the bottom. Sandy areas surrounding rock and debris are the most productive areas to fish for these tasty doormats.

—This morning’s wind whipped the gulf into a soup, but the mangrove snapper bite was as good as I have ever seen it. The strong tide, wind, low-light, and dirty water made these finicky fish feel more comfortable than they usually are. They seemed to have trouble seeing the hook, lines, and sinkers, and were easier to fool. Whatever the case, my clients managed to get their limit within an hour or so.

—Sea trout were eating well this afternoon, and we managed to get into some nearly every-cast action near the grass flats and channel edges with a moving tide. Pilchards, shrimp, jigs, and pinfish are the baits of choice for this ambush predator.

—Flounder are also showing up off of the beaches near structure and the sandy areas surrounding it. They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans, and will readily take artificials.

—This past week, big flounder have begun to show themselves off of the beach as they head offshore to spawn. Their movement usually lasts from late Spring until early Fall, and will continue to give my clients great action for the next few months.

—Sandy areas close to nearshore structure seem to be the best hangouts, and live or dead pilchards have been the bait of choice. Jigs will also entice these fun, tasty, and unique fish to eat.

—After an exciting morning, Bill Sr., Bill Jr., and Chad from Riverview, Florida managed to get a nice flounder catch along with some snapper and grouper.
