March

Snook

Inshore, snook, seatrout, and redfish action around Anna Maria Island, Palma Sola Bay, Manatee River, and Sarasota Bay starts to become much more consistent. These key species can be caught on mangrove shorelines, under residential docks, near oyster bars, and lying in the sandy holes scattered throughout deeper grassflats – especially during a strong tide. Chumming with live shiners or using topwater lures are both effective strategies this time of year.

Spanish Mackerel

There are plenty of sheepshead still around nearshore structure this month, but their numbers will likely begin thinning as we transition into April. Try using a #4 or #2 hook with a small live shrimp or fiddler crab for bait. Keep an eye out for Spanish mackerel in these same areas. Hanging a chum bag will usually bring the mackerel in and a live pilchard, silver spoon, or white bucktail jig will get them to bite.

Kingfish

Offshore, look for mangrove snapper, gag grouper, and king mackerel around wrecks, artificial reefs, and areas of natural rocky bottom. Windy conditions can be frequent in March, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather before and during your offshore trip.
