—–Fishing over the last few weeks out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria Island has been some of the most exciting springtime fishing that I can remember. We had plenty of visitors to the Island with spring breaks and folks from up north trying to escape the winter.
—–Shiners became available to use as bait about 3 weeks ago and the fishing has not been the same since. The arrival of the shiners seems to announce the beginning of snook season and the shift from Bay and near shore fishing to Intracoastal Waterways and backwater fishing. I’m happy to report that the snook, trout and redfish have all been cooperating.
——My clients and I have been fishing for trout on the deep grass flats around Sister Keys, Palma Sola Bay and Sarasota Bay during the rising tides and then sneaking in tight near the mangrove shorelines as the tide rushes out to look for snook and redfish in the sandy potholes.
—–I want to make it clear that you do not have to have shiners to catch fish. You can catch snook, redfish and trout with artificials and live shrimp. Trout are the quickest to take an artificial and I like to use a light 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jighead tipped with a plastic jig. Berkley Gulps, DOA shrimp and Cal Jigs are some of the more popular brand names that will catch fish.
