—–Mangrove snapper are one of the Fall inshore fishing highlights around Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Egmont Key and the Manatee River.
—–You do not have to run offshore to catch some of these tasty snappers. They can be found around most bridges and rocky bottom structure. Tampa Bay and Manatee County artificial reefs are a great place to start looking.
—–Start with light line and small hooks. They see very well so 20 pound fluorocarbon should be the maximum leader weight. 24 to 36 inches will suffice.
—–We usually pick a likely spot then do a little chumming to get them turned-on. Chopped shiners or sardines work well. You can buy frozen, bagged, 5# chum blocks. They dissolve over the course of an hour or so and slowly disperse a great chum slick.
—–The snapper will hit shrimp, shiners or cut bait that resembles the chum.
—–Have Fun!
