—–Before the rains began this week I was taking my charters to the shallow grass flats around Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key to fish for snook and redfish.
—–Fishing for redfish has been strong over the last month in the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay and now we are seeing snook moving back on to the grass flats along mangrove shorelines.
—–Although you can catch shiners on flats along the Intracoastal Waterway, nicer bait has been available on the beach. Watch for diving birds in very shallow water. That’s where you will find the bait.
—–Attached are some photos of our latest trip. We fished grass flat potholes on a rising tide and gradually moved closer to the mangrove shoreline as the tide continued to rise. Eventually we were casting so that our bait landed directly under the mangrove branches.
—–We kept a couple keeper redfish for dinner but all of our snook were released alive.

Bill Ellis, resident of Holmes Beach and the UK, caught some nice snook as we were casting toward the mangroves.

I even had a chance to make a few casts to the bait-bustin' reds.

Bill Ellis took this one home for dinner. We released more than a dozen hard fighting redfish that day.
