—–A few years ago, a red tide outbreak decimated the Tampa Bay area flounder population. BUT..this year, the late summer flounder fishing around Anna Maria Island has been nothing short of spectacular. Live bait, dead bait, cut bait strips and artificials have all been catching flatties.
—–Flounder are ambush feeders. If you can find some sandy bottom near structure, such as artificial reefs, docks or bridges, then you can catch some flounder. The sandy bottom, some structure and a nice tidal flow are the keys!
—–Over the last few weeks, my charters have had some very impressive catches. Live shiners have been our favorite bait to bounce along the bottom but we have caught dozens of flounder using a ¼ or 3/8 ounce jig rigged with a Berkley Gulp Flats Worm. Give them a try. They really work. Have fun!
