—July is an exciting time because it marks the beginning of gag grouper season! My clients are excited to finally be able to keep a few grouper to bring home for dinner after releasing so many. The regulations allow for each person on my boat to keep four grouper per day, two of which can be gag grouper.
—The morning bite has been very strong with any sort of moving tide, and seems to slow down as the sun and temperature rise. Target structure around Anna Maria Island, and don’t ignore Tampa Bay or the Skyway Bridge; these areas produce this time of year.
—Threadfins are plentiful right now, so I recommend using a sabiki rig to catch a few for the baitwell. Pinfish and small grunts are also great baits.
—These nice grouper were caught while fishing this morning with my brother and dad in Tampa Bay.

—June has been hot and sticky. We saw rain in the area most afternoons and the flotilla of boats on the water assure us summertime is in full effect! On my boat, snook and tarpon have been the main Anna Maria Island targets in June. Also being routinely caught in and around the bay and local beaches are; seatrout, mangrove snapper, grouper, mackerel and sharks.
—Snook fishing this time of the year tends to move out of the back bays and into the passes and beaches. This is an annual migration pattern that these fish follow year after year in order to breed. We have been capitalizing on their need to feed while on this journey. Whitebait and small hard-bodied lures have been baits of choice.
—There are still good numbers of tarpon moving up and down the beaches and passes. We have been catching these fish on live bait on moving tides. The trick with tarpon is being very stealthy. Getting up wind / up tide from the fish, cutting the engine and drifting and/or anchoring have been proven methods. The tarpon fishing has really heated up this last week of the month on the moon.
—One of the best things about summer time fishing, here around Anna Maria Island and Tampa Bay, is the great variety of species you can encounter in a single four hour fishing trip. Snapper,  grouper and flounder along with and mackerel and sharks can be found on many shallow rock piles and reefs.

—Josh Sato and Joey Mattay have the permit dialed in. They found May and early June to be an action-packed time period, with the nearby offshore wrecks and structure holding spawning fish. Joey and Josh said that the best way to pull off a catch of big permit was to drift baits back to the fish after anchoring up-current of structure within 20 miles of Anna maria Island.
—Small pass crabs were said to be the bait of choice, and they were most effective when suspended just above the targeted structure.
—This action may be slowing down as June draws to a close, but if you get a chance to try these techniques and hook into some big permit, be sure to HOLD ON TIGHT!

—Don’t forget about the action-packed June summer snooking around Anna Maria Island. Many fish move through the passes and onto the beaches this time of year, and my clients and I have been able to capitalize on the opportunity.
—Live baits such as small sand perch, or pilchards have an irresistible affect on these moving snook, and even the large females have been readily feeding.
—This movement of snook, and the fun sight-casting action that can go with it should last through July, and maybe even into August if we’re lucky.

—–The last few weeks have seen the completion of the transition from cool to warm water fishing around Anna Maria Island. Snook, redfish and trout dominate the backwater scene while the near shore chatter revolves around cobia, mackerel, kingfish and permit. Offshore boats will be looking for red grouper, amberjack and snapper. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing over the last few weeks out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria Island has been some of the most exciting springtime fishing that I can remember. We had plenty of visitors to the Island with spring breaks and folks from up north trying to escape the winter.
—–Shiners became available to use as bait about 3 weeks ago and the fishing has not been the same since. The arrival of the shiners seems to announce the beginning of snook season and the shift from Bay and near shore fishing to Intracoastal Waterways and backwater fishing. I’m happy to report that the snook, trout and redfish have all been cooperating. Continue Reading…

—–This has been one of those weeks that traditional winter fishing overlaps with early spring fishing and that’s good news for fishermen!
—–Winter fishing in Tampa Bay is still going strong. You can still expect to catch sheepshead, grouper and snapper on the artificial reefs. Fishing along the sandy beaches of Anna Maria Island and Egmont Key might get you some nice pompano too. There are plenty of spanish mackerel around. Try throwing anything bright and shiney around any structure in the Bay. Continue Reading…

—–Fishing this past week out of Island Discount Tackle on Anna Maria island has produced some amazing and action packed fish catching opportunities on our beautiful waters of Manatee county.
—–The Spring pattern is just now taking hold with the inshore slam; snook ,speckled trout.and redfish coming alive on to the flats and feeding heavily as they start their exit from their Winter time hang outs ,docks and deep water, onto the their Springtime haunts, flats and potholes. On my recent charters we have been concentrating on snook as the season opened March 1. Now is the best time to get one for the dinner table . Rallies of 20 fish a trip have been the norm when you can find moving warm water and their feeding stations. This week’s “High Hook”went to snowbird Robert Lyons,85,of Davenport Fl and Saratoga NY with a pair of over slot snook 36″ and 34” snook all caught while fishing seated on a cushion fishing with a bobber and a large shiner . After pictures both fish were released to fight another day . The key to catching the big ones has been to use the biggest shiners in your live well and tossing your baits a country mile away from your boat. Continue Reading…

—–Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, who was visiting fellow NHRA Hall of Famer and Anna Maria resident, Fred Miller, had a good weekend fishing Tampa Bay for snapper and sheepshead. Using small jigheads and live shrimp, Don and Fred had good luck fishing around some of the artificial reefs scattered around the Bay.
—–Now that we have turned the corner into March, we will start looking for more opportunities to catch redfish and big trout.
—–Although shiners are not an easy catch on the grassflats, there are bait schools around the Skyway Bridge and these shiners will be fun to throw at the redfish and trout.
